One of the strategies I used starting off was to pay for advertising.


I thought this was really going to change it for me.

For weeks the salesman kept on calling me telling how this would dramatically increase my customer base.

So I finally decided to pull the trigger. And guess what happened...

Over the span of 45 days, I spent $700 and got ZERO calls or emails in return.

You’re probably starting your business part-time as you have another full-time or part-time job.

So given your limited resources and trying to get complete strangers to pay for your services within a reasonable time is going to be a bit difficult. Not impossible, but difficult.

Instead, do this

Because the truth is, it’s not just about getting people to pay for your services. You also need to figure out a couple other things:

  • How much do I charge per hour or service?
  • How long is a detail going to take me?
  • What services do I offer?
  • How many cars can I service in a day?

To move your business in the right direction, you need the proper foundation from the beginning.

Instead of wondering month after month, scratching your head on why you’re not getting customers, you need to be taking action everyday to grow your business.

That’s exactly what I started to do.

I came up with a strategy, I tried it out, and measured the results. I repeated this process until I finally found a handful of strategies that worked REALLY well.

I’m going to breakdown 4 myths that I frequently hear amongst detailers.

These are same myths that I heard and took as advice when I started out. You will probably encounter these myths and will try to derail you from your journey. Don’t let it happen!

Myth #1: You have to spend $10,000/month on a marketing agency to help you get customers

When you hear this type of advice, you get a bit demotivated. At least I did. Especially if it’s coming from a well-known expert in the detailing industry.

How in the heck can any small business owner afford investing $10,000/month on marketing when they’re first starting off? Unless you have a huge business loan or some type of capital, it’s impossible.

It can be much more simple (and affordable) to get your business going and people paying for your services than hiring a marketing agency.

And no, you don’t have to spend anything relatively close to the $10,000 per month. Not even close to that.

You want to work with what you have and get the most out of it. Not just get as much money, invest as much money, and make as much money as possible. You won’t get far like that.

Myth #2: Provide quality results and word-of-mouth will spread

I’m all for providing a great service. You want customers telling their friends and family members about their experience with you. However, that cannot be your primary strategy to start and grow.

You know why?

Because how do you even get to showcase your skills if you don’t know how to attract paying customers in the first place?

You’re putting the cart before the horse.

It doesn’t matter if you’re the best detailer in your city. It doesn’t matter if you use the best products and tools to get the job done.

None of that matters.

Why not?

If no one knows who you are or what you offer, no one is going to hire you. No one is going to call you, pull money out from their wallet, and give it to you for your services.

Myth #3: Getting customers and making money will take years

I think one of the most common themes I hear from seasoned detailers is, “Don’t expect for things to take off. It will take a couple of years until you get a customer base going.”

I agree. It does take time to get your business up and running. Of course it’s a lot of work.

And you’ve heard it countless times, “Good things come to those who wait.”

BUT, you can GREEAATTLLYYY reduce the time it takes you to see those results by following a proven framework.

Most of the seasoned detailers I talk to come from the old days before we had platforms like social media, YouTube, and Google.
